Activities - Grenada Carnival
Off all the celebrations that take place on this island throughout the year, the Grenada Carnival has to be the biggest, brightest, and most spectacular revelry of all. Held annually in mid-August, the Grenada Carnival is a local version of the popular festival celebrated on nearly every Caribbean island in one fashion or another. Like most, the Grenada Carnival fêtes a number of different things; originally meant to mark the coming of Lent, the date of today's Grenada Carnival has it representing other important elements of Grenadian culture, most notably its African roots and traditions. Not only is the Grenada Carnival a good excuse for a party, it is seen as a way of bringing people together under a common cultural banner.
Activities held during the Grenada Carnival include a Calypso competition, steelband parade, and street theatre. The festivities wrap up with a pageant at the National Stadium and colorful blow-out parade on Grenada Carnival Tuesday.
